“We can push or pull power to make the Emirates Stadium look like it’s consuming a little bit more when energy is cheap, and a lot less power or even export power back to the grid when the prices dictate that,” Clark says. While the true cost savings to the club will depend on the cost of electricity, Clark says it will be “certainly a double-figure percentage.”

However, while inverters are increasingly connected to the internet, most solar inverters in the field today can’t be cyberattacked because they only have one-way communications and don’t have the ability to receive commands, Dan Whitten, the Solar Energy Industries Association’s vice president of communications told Bloomberg Environment.

“We didn’t just focus on the person who wants to save on an electric bill but focused on emergency responders and state government, but in an affordable manner,” Brennan says. “To do this, we basically built a 20-kW inverter and throttled it down. We don’t have heating issues because we are not taxing the system.”

The LM5113, from Texas Instruments, is a half-bridge driver for eGaN FETs that implements bootstrap regulation (Fig. 9). Integrated in the undervoltage lockout is an overvoltage clamp that limits bootstrap voltage to 5.2 V, ensuring sufficient reliable operation under all circuit conditions. Besides the clamp, there are separate source and sink pins, >50 V/ns dv/dt capability, matched propagation time, 0.5-Ω pull down, and separate high-side and low-side inputs that improve efficiencies.

The overall design is stylish, with a band of gold trim separating the halves and contrasting material on top and bottom.

Solar power arrays produce direct current, or DC; solar inverters convert direct current into the standard medium voltage level of alternating current, or AC, the type of power delivered to the grid. In current systems, bulky step-up transformers are needed to increase AC voltage from low to medium before transferring it to the grid.

“The primary concern of the report first and foremost is that policy makers, regulators, and industry standards cannot keep up,” Raymond Watts, a co-author of the report, told Bloomberg Environment.
