The Redback Smart Hybrid System combines a a 5kW solar inverter, a battery cabinet which is expandable and holds up to 9.6kWh of energy storage, and market energy management software.

Closed-loop transducers have an architecture which, due to the transformer effect, provide good speed, noise and linearity performance. Historically, the low offset requirements have been met using a fluxgate as the magnetically-sensitive element. However, many of LEM´s current transducers now achieve low offset (and low offset drift) thanks to design innovations in the CMOS ASIC used. The ASIC includes Hall cells and low offset amplifiers merged in a new patented architecture, resulting in sensors whose construction is simpler than that of the fluxgate families with similar performance.

Most solutions to this problem have involved adding carbon materials and polymer binders to create a framework to contain the silicon. The process for doing it, according to Gogotsi, is complex and carbon contributes little to charge storage by the battery.

Power electronics deals with the switching of electronic circuits to control the flow of electrical energy. It has three parts: inverter, power module, and power device. Power electronics is basically the technology behind the operation of prominent components in the EVs, inverters, and DC-DC converters. The inverter converts the DC of the battery into three-phase AC that is required by the electric motor during recuperation. Power electronics converts the AC generated by the electric motor into DC, and thus charges the battery. The DC-DC converter supplies the 12V board net of the hybrid and EVs with power.

Also this month, a research team from U.S.-based Stanford University announced the development of a prototype of a manganese-hydrogen battery for the storage of power produced by large-scale wind and solar facilities. The prototype of the water-based battery may only be three inches tall and able to generate 20 milliwatt hours of electricity, however the researchers believe the device could reach an industrial scale, thus becoming able to “charge and recharge up to 10,000 times.”

"They made some huge strides with that car, but it wasn’t all that it could have been and certainly not what they envisioned when they unveiled the concept," Abuelsamid said.

SiC excels over Si as a semiconductor material in 600 V and higher-rated breakdown voltage devices. SiC Schottky diodes at 600- and 1200-V ratings are commercially available and accepted as the best solution for efficiency improvement in power converters. Figure 2 illustrates an example of using SiC devices in an EV battery charger, which was developed at North Carolina State University.
