The transportation of hydrogen for use at refueling stations poses additional safety risks — stations use sensors to monitor for leaks. There have not been serious incidents reported in California, and the industrial sector has been transporting hydrogen for decades.

The new energy storage solution will provide grid stability and reliability, as well as prevent curtailment of generation from renewable sources. The GEMS software system will manage the island’s generation assets as a microgrid. The system is expected to be online in April.

The biggest problem: The cars remain expensive. Nexo, for instance, is the most expensive Hyundai on sale in the U.S., with a starting price of $59,345 (starting prices for the brand’s comparably-sized Santa Fe start at $24,250). The Toyota Mirai and Honda Clarity fuel cell models have a similar MSRP in the $59,000 range. The maximum allowable gate-source voltage for an eGaN FET of 6V is low compared with traditional silicon. “Battery-based systems are exploding because they can do time-of-use shifting and get around these solar restrictions,” Brennan said.
