Such hydro hybrid systems already exist with land-based photovoltaic power plants. The biggest, of course, is in China. The solar array does the heavy lifting during peak daylight hours, with the hydro generators doing more of the work at other times.

TrendForce further estimated that negative growth will be recorded this year in the global market – around 5-8% – to fall to 92 to 95 GW. This compares to the 98 to 99 GW that were installed in 2017; and is more bleak than both IHS Markit’s – which revised its expectations down from 113 GW to 105 GW – and SolarPower Europe’s, which expects to see 102 rather than 107 GW this year.

“We’ve had dozens of other clubs approach us about working with them in the same way,” Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Octopus Energy’s director of product and marketing, tells Inverse.

Originally, the Volt was to be a sleek, futuristic five-seat vehicle built to hold a battery and a new three-cylinder engine to generate electricity, said Navigant Research analyst Sam Abuelsamid. But because of GM’s financial problems, the project was scaled back and became a modified version of the Chevrolet Cruze compact car with only four seats and many parts from other GM vehicles, he said.
