The Eco Explorer is offered under the same new Campervan Co spinoff brand that launched the D:5 Terrain van, but it’s more closely related to Campers Scotland’s Eco Campers line. The new Explorer differs from older Alphard-based hybrid Eco Campers because it’s a lighter, more versatile style of camper developed in response to customers who wanted an eco-friendly camper van that could also do everyday commuting. The company thinks of it as a "city-to-country" van that can be driven everyday while still remaining completely stocked and ready to go for a camping trip, even if that trip is taken on a whim with little time to pack.

“I wanted them to be more visible so I could show people what could be done to offset their utility bills and reduce carbon to help with climate change,” he said.

The average price for hydrogen fuel in California is about $16/kg — gasoline is sold by the gallon (volume) and hydrogen by the kilogram (weight). To put that in perspective, 1 gal of gasoline has about the same amount of energy as 1 kg of hydrogen. Most fuel cell electric cars carry about 5 kg to 6 kg of hydrogen but go twice the distance of a modern internal combustion engine car with equivalent gas in the tank, which works out to a gasoline-per-gallon equivalent between $5 and $6.

“The industry trend is not necessarily putting the battery and the inverter together like Tesla. Instead it’s having the right-size battery bank and inverter so that you’re primarily using solar power and stored solar power throughout the day and night and the grid is basically a backup,” Brennan said.

“There has been a lot of interest and demand in our H5001 hybrid inverter, but we realize that it does not fulfill everyone’s energy storage requirements. To better serve the market, we added a new stacking feature to our hybrid inverters and are releasing a new AC-coupled hybrid inverter and new batteries,” said Frank O’Young, Darfon associate VP.

Note that in a transformer-less system, the DC side does indeed have a DC voltage corresponding to the output of the photovoltaic cells between the PV+ and PV- nodes (this may be increased by a DC-DC converter) but each of the PV nodes also has an AC voltage whose peak value is similar to the peak output voltage of the AC side. If not considered at the system level, this represents a serious safety hazard.

What’s better than one form of sustainable green energy? Two. Engineers are already working at making grid-connected hybrid systems that combine floating solar panels with hydropower plants. The obvious advantage is that the hydropower systems are already tapped into the grid, providing some of the needed infrastructure to make it all work. One small system was built in Portugal a few years ago.
