The inverter does not require that batteries are connected at the time of installation, and until the energy storage solution is integrated owners can still make use of instantaneous solar power availability via the 2,000W Secure Power System (SPS) feature long offered in SMA products.

In a sign of things to come, California featured predominantly in May’s headlines with the news that it had set a new record for peak output of utility-scale solar at more than 10.5 GW. It also hit a new record for the instantaneous portion of demand met by renewable energy on April 28, at 73%, just 15 minutes before the solar record, with solar and wind alone meeting 64% of demand.

And you can use it for that, but TYLT is picturing a gathering of people, all charging their mobile devices. So output for the charger is four USB-A ports, each putting out 2A simultaneously. You can plug in four smartphones, wireless headphones, or small tablets and have them all charge.

Many battery-based inverters don’t require a battery pairing from the start. If and when customers decide to add a battery to their solar installation, all the infrastructure is already in place to easily integrate storage.

“A battery-enabled inverter, or battery-based inverter, is something that can do a lot more than just sell back power to the grid,” Brennan said. “It can store power, it can work off-grid, it can store power for time-of-use [rate structures].”

“We work with them to get a list of fixtures, so if they’ve got a game that starts at three o’clock on a sunny afternoon, they’ll have a different power consumption profile to seven o’clock on a Tuesday evening,” Bunney says, effectively saying Arsenal’s battery can do it on a cold, rainy night in North London.

“The highest demand on the system is six o’clock on a winter weekday evening,” Bunney tells Inverse. “Generally the wind won’t be blowing, the sun certainly won’t be shining. Whatever the renewables do, we still need to be able to meet that demand. However, storage and batteries really unlock this, which is very exciting.”
