Unless you live near a mosquito-infested bayou, chances are that real estate prices have been climbing since the Big Fat Recession of 2008. That’s doubly (or more) true if you live in one of the most expensive cities of the world where residents have to choose between the cost of buying avocado toast for weekly brunch dates and paying rent on an apartment too small for IKEA furniture. In other words, there’s less and less real estate available to build traditional solar farms on terra firma. Floating solar farms are similar to land-based solar power systems except that they are deployed on pontoon-type floats, with an anchoring and mooring system holding the platform in place. In most cases, they are built on man-made reservoirs. There are variations, of course, but generally, they might look something like this:

The EV garbage truck is actually a great application. All that start and stop use means a diesel garbage truck gets about 1 to 2 mpg, so it would be a huge cost savings. Speaking of cost savings, has there ever been an economic study of the effect on business of NOT spending all that money on gas and diesel? While the petroleum industry will be seriously disrupted, the general cost savings across the economy from reduced fuel costs would be like a massive tax break, especially if you consider that a non-negligible percentage of everyone’s pay check goes into paying for transportation energy in one form or another. Maybe an analysis of the effect of removing the “Energy/Life Tax” is a better way to promote EVs?

As the cost of DC-DC converters continues to fall through 2023, and as hardware coordination issues are resolved and favorable policies are introduced, DC coupling in the FTM market will grow for specific use-case applications.

Both the H5000 and HB5 feature a stacking ability where the system can be configured to fit the site’s specific demands. If 5.5 kW or less is needed when off the grid, then you can use a single hybrid inverter. Stacking two hybrid inverters will get you 11 kW continuous and 15 kW surge power. If that is not enough, you can stack yet another hybrid inverter for 16.5kW of continuous power. Stacking does not only increase the amount of power, it also increases energy storage capacity. Each hybrid inverter has its own charging capability and can be controlled to work together, so you can incrementally add power and storage in parallel at the same time.

Floating solar farms appear to be the new wave in renewable energy systems. The cool thing is that while we’re just at the starting line, the technology itself is proven and still dropping in cost. This isn’t gimmicky or financially risky, like cars with solar panels, but a viable solution that will be deployed rapidly in the next few years.

Bonaire set a goal of 100% renewables in 2004 after a fire destroyed the main diesel generator on the island in 2004. The wind generators added afterwards helped drive the cost of electricity in Bonaire down from $0.50 per kilowatt-hour to $0.22 per kWh, according to the World Bank.
