Hybrid inverters paired with batteries can help avoid demand charges by storing solar energy during high solar production times, then be programmed to self-supply power from the battery instead of buying power from the grid once the house consumes a certain amount of energy. That way, the home never crosses the high demand threshold and is not charged the extra, sometimes exorbitant, fees.

I also spend no money and no time on service. The only real service I’ve had was an in-warranty replacement of the regular 12v battery that supports the car’s computers and infotainment system. The battery is four modules configured as one battery system. Each bank has four blocks with inverter modules, transforming the DC power out to AC, before sending it through to the main high-voltage ring. The team can monitor a staggering amount of information about this setup, including how much power the stadium is using. While the operators know the estimated price of electricity a day in advance, and can plan accordingly, the system can also detect when there’s an unexpected imbalance in the power grid through the attached substation that leads to the local power network.

“A battery-enabled inverter, or battery-based inverter, is something that can do a lot more than just sell back power to the grid,” Brennan said. “It can store power, it can work off-grid, it can store power for time-of-use [rate structures].”
